Celebrating Women’s History Month, Stories from a Women-led Design Team

One of KMDG’s values is the belief that inclusivity and diversity are the bedrock to better design and society. As a women-owned business with also a staff majority of women, Women’s History Month is the perfect backdrop to highlight our work and the team on Seaport Circle in Boston.

My mother’s birthday is on March 8th and we celebrated International Women’s Day well before it became a hashtag on social media. My mother’s hope for me and my sister when we were growing up was that we would have more inclusive opportunities than she had. And I hope in the future, that my two-year old daughter will also have equal or better opportunities to join an inclusive workplace and contribute freely.

As part of a women-owned business enterprise firm, I am proud to show up at work each day and be a part of a women-led team. Working on Seaport Circle has been an empowering experience especially because Amy Korté, President of Arrowstreet,  assembled a women-led team across all disciplines. With Kaki as PIC and my role as the project manager, I have had the unique experience of joining coordination calls where the structural engineer, transportation engineer, lighting designer, waterproofing consultant, MEP, architect, interior architect, and landscape architect are all women. I have worked in various capacities in the AEC community for close to 20 years and this is a professional milestone for me.  Having just submitted 100% CD’s for the project we all look forward to watching as this women-led team’s work comes to fruition and hope to see women in the field from all building trades contributing to getting this project built. In the future we hope to see this unique experience become more commonplace for the next generation of female designers.
