Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston is expanding with a new Inpatient addition to the Hospital’s Main Building. To support this expansion a replacement West Garage, which replaces an older existing garage on the site. A new driveway to the Replacement West Garage was added on Allandale Street and a new West Surface Lot was designed in the location of the demolished garage.

The goal of the landscape design for the Faulkner Campus is to create a seamless transition between the already robust existing landscape throughout the campus and the new construction and related landscape. The design enhances existing planted areas and creates new landscaped areas with characteristics uniquely suited to each portion of the campus, whether adjacent to a building, or situated along a public thoroughfare. The planted improvements build on the solid base provided by the long-time commitment of the Hospital to its green spaces and the extension of its campus to surrounding landscapes, most notably the Arnold Arboretum and Allandale Woods. Prior to commencing design studies, a tree study providing an existing tree inventory was conducted by KMDG. The study defined the areas where existing trees could be preserved, and where new plantings would need to be added to expand and enhance the landscape around the new construction.
