Lighting and paving strategies provide continuity, but variations in the scale and types of spaces, trees, and furnishings reflect Newtonville’s character.

Newton is a city of villages, each with their own distinct character; the challenge is for them to have their own personality while having some continuity and uniting features. Having successfully reenvisioned a streetscape and plaza gathering space in West Newton, KMDG was hired to create a unique public realm character for Newtonville which includes a single-family residential zone as well as single-story commercial district. Street and pedestrian lighting strategies and the paving material palette provide continuity, but variations in the scale and types of spaces, trees and furnishings reflect Newtonville’s uniqueness.
