After winning two rounds of international design competition to create a new vision for the Shanghai Bund, KMDG worked with Chan Krieger Sieniewicz (now nbbj) to remake this historic riverfront for the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai.
Nearly a mile long, the design is a series of landscapes—paved courts, gardens, urban parks, planted slopes, promenade—that relate to their adjacent condition (office, retail, residential) to bring human scale to the site. Important crossings such as Nanjing and Yan’an Roads are given prominence on the Bund with new urban plazas, while historic existing landscapes, such as the Huangpo Park and the riverfront promenade, have new ground plane conditions, site utilities, pavilions, and solve critical circulation problems for both every day and festival uses.
