Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston is expanding the hospital’s main building with a new inpatient addition. To support this expansion, the hospital is also replacing the existing garage on the site with the new West Garage. The hospital built a new driveway to the West Garage on Allandale Street and added the West Surface Lot at the site of the demolished garage.
The goal of the landscape design for the hospital’s campus is to create a seamless transition between the already robust existing landscape throughout the site and the new construction and related landscape. The design enhances existing planted areas and creates new landscaped areas with characteristics uniquely suited to each portion of the campus—be that adjacent to a building or situated along a public thoroughfare. The planted improvements build on the solid base provided by hospital’s long-time commitment to its green spaces and the extension of its campus to surrounding landscapes, most notably the Arnold Arboretum and Allandale Woods. Prior to commencing design studies, KMDG conducted a tree study providing an existing tree inventory. The study defined the areas where existing trees could be preserved and where new plantings would need to be added to expand and enhance the landscape around the new construction.
