Medfield Housing

The project comprises the adaptive reuse of 27 existing buildings of the former Medfield State Hospital into multi-family housing and ancillary amenity space. The site design invites tenants and the greater community to use the site and actively integrates resiliency measures that will reduce the environmental impact of the historic rehabilitation.

KMDG is collaborating with Trinity Financial, ICON Architecture, and VHB to re-develop the former Medfield State Hospital in Medfield, MA. Perched high in the northwest corner of Medfield, overlooking the Charles River and nestled amidst a majestic landscape of mature, canopy trees and a network of trails, is the former Medfield State Hospital Campus. Medfield State Hospital (MSH) is listed in the State and National Registers of Historic Places and is designated a local historic district.

The 47.5 acre site combines multi-family residential units adapted from the historic hospital buildings with the new Bellforge Arts Center. The project comprises the adaptive reuse of 27 existing buildings into multi-family housing and ancillary amenity space. This new vision for the site invites the greater community to use these open space, along with tenants of all ages and interests. The team is actively integrating resiliency measures that will reduce the environmental impact of the historic rehabilitation, guided by the National Park Service and the Massachusetts Historic Commission.
