This project transformed a one acre surface parking and air-side tarmac less than 400 yards from active runways into occupiable space that counteracts the sense of placelessness that often accompanies the experience of air travel. Working within fire protection, blast-wall security, environmental, and U.S. State Department constraints, the project created a new kind of terminal experience.

Advocating for sustainable strategies in a setting where these tactics are often disregarded, the team overcame challenging programmatic and technical issues to deliver a garden experience for events and everyday use. The interior-exterior experience is woven together through wooden cladding that runs through both spaces, creating a feeling of warmth and belonging. New England’s landscape is celebrated with native aspen trees, ferns, and low shrubs, while a swathe of grasses echo the salt marshes of the airport’s coastal edge.

Signature Aviation at Boston Logan Airport became the first Fixed-Base of Operations (FBO) facility in the nation to earn LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
