Winchester’s planning department invited KMDG to create a new vision that overcomes what residents refer to as ‘The Great Wall’—raised commuter rail lines that slice the town in two. Our proposal opens the space below the tracks at a critical junction of streets, and transforms a traffic island into a paved town square that promotes visual and pedestrian connectivity. The products of the study were a series of before/after views, diagrams examining and solving contextual issues of traffic, connectivity of landscape spaces, and use of these spaces for street festivals and holiday markets—all presented in live and web-based presentations for public review and comment.
