Natural Bridge State Park Master Plan
KMDG developed a masterplan for the park site that will provide safe and increased access to both the natural and industrial features, strengthen the interpretation of the natural and human histories of the site, and improve the orientation and circulation within the park—with an emphasis on increasing the accessibility for all users.

The Natural Bridge State Park in Massachusetts holds a fascinating history dating back 550 million years when shell deposits transformed into limestone and later crystallized into marble due to geological pressures during the formation of the Hoosac and Berkshire Mountain ranges. Serving as a marble quarry from 1810 to 1947, the site features a distinctive marble dam constructed in 1838, harnessing rushing water to power quarry operations and sparking an industrial revolution in the North Adams area. The park evolved into a renowned tourist destination from 1950 to 1983 while privately owned by the Elder family before its acquisition by the state in 1985.
KMDG developed a masterplan for the park site that will provide safe and increased access to both the natural and industrial features, strengthen the interpretation of the natural and human histories of the site, and improve the orientation and circulation within the park—with an emphasis on increasing the accessibility for all users. KMDG and our team has engaged the local and regional community through intercept surveys and virtual meetings as well as the Indigenous peoples to whom this area was their ancestral homeland.
In addition to designing new viewing structures within the chasm, KMDG and our team developed plans to improve the parking and visitor center experience through green infrastructure and a new entry plaza with site interpretation for a deeper understanding of the park. We have also proposed a new shelter that will allow for small groups to gather for orientation or events. The mill dam, chasm area, quarry, and mill site will all have new circulation amenities increasing visitor safety, access, and engagement for a rich new experience. Immediately following the completion of the master planning phase, KMDG started design documentation.
